Photographer Lisa Krantz, a nine-year veteran of the San Antonio Express-News, has won the national Scripps Howard Award for photojournalism for the second time in three years.
Krantz is a frequent visitor to San Antonio College's photography classes; her work beat out that of two other finalists, photographers from the Los Angeles Times and the Washington Post.
Krantz's winning portfolio featured photographs illustrating four stories:
The struggles of a young veteran of the Afghanistan War who lost an arm and both legs to a bomb.
The rise and fall of then-presidential candidate Gov. Rick Perry, with his supporters transitioning from buoyant optimism to glum defeat during the Iowa caucuses in the first few days of 2012.
The everyday life of the dwindling population of Pelham, a town founded by emancipated slaves in 1866.
The excitement of the Castro brothers, Mayor Julián and then-state Rep. Joaquín, as they reveled in their roles at the 2012 Democratic National Convention.
The annual Scripps Howard competition, which honors work in print, broadcast and online journalism, solicits entries from news organizations across the U.S.
Krantz and the other honorees will each receive $10,000 and a trophy during a dinner May 9 in Naples, Fla.
