National convention has SAC connection



The Journalism Education Association and National Scholastic Press Association convention was in San Antonio Nov. 15-18 at the Marriott Rivercenter & Riverwalk and the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center. 

At the opening session on Nov. 15, attendees heard from Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Rodolfo Gonzalez, who has been working for newspapers since 1989. studied journalism, photography and mass communication at San Antonio College. He has worked at the San Antonio Light, Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Providence Journal-Bulletin and Rocky Mountain News, where he and the photography staff were awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Spot News Photography for coverage of the Columbine High School shooting in Littleton, Colorado. Since the fall of 2000, he has been on staff at the Austin American-Statesman. 

Francisco Vara-Orta, an education reporter for the San Antonio Express-News, attended the Urban Journalism Workshop at San Antonio College and earned a degree from St. Mary’s University. He also has worked for the Los Angeles Times, Los Angeles Business Journal, Austin Business Journal and La Prensa de San Antonio. His work has also appeared in the Austin American-Statesman, Houston Chronicle and Laredo Morning Times. He serves as the secretary of the San Antonio Association of Hispanic Journalists.

Other former students also helped with the convention, including Kin Man Hui, a photojournalist at the San Antonio Express-News. Hui spoke Saturday to about 100 students in a session on photography.  Hui posted this comment on Facebook:"Spoke at the Journalism Educators Association conference to about 100 kids. When did all the girls look like Taylor Swift and the boys look like members of One Direction? Good bunch of kids, though." He earned a bachelor's degree in 1991 from the University of Texas at San Antonio. He regularly visits photography and Introduction to Mass Communications classes at the college.
