
Elizabeth Ruiz started her career at The Ranger
Ruiz, a veteran San Antonio news and radio personality and former student at San Antonio College, will receive the Edna McGaffey Excellence in Media Award from the Association for Women in Communications on Friday, June 22, at the Westin Riverwalk San Antonio Hotel..During her years at radio station KTSA, Ruiz has covered feature entertainment stories along with some of San Antonio’s most important news and political events. Her colorful reporting and insightful interviews have been KTSA benchmarks. She has anchored both morning and afternoon newscasts for KTSA and for several years had been a popular member of the former 102.7 KTFM Morning Show.
Active in the community and a popular emcee at events throughout the year such as the annual Fiesta kick-off ceremonies and shows at the Arneson River Theater, including Fiesta del Rio and Fandango. A professional singer, Liz sings with Mariachi groups and the St. Pius 10th Folk Choir, opened Spurs games and rodeos with the National Anthem and has performed with many of the areas top bands and orchestras.
Before her broadcasting career, Liz taught choir at Burbank High School after graduating Cum Laude with a music degree from Trinity University. She serves on the Advisory Board of the Children’s Chorus of San Antonio.
The San Antonio native graduated from Kennedy High School and studied journalism at San Antonio College where she was editor of The Ranger newspaper in 1980. Her maturity and good judgment served as examples to the staff.
She is a member of the Edgewood Hall of Fame, the San Antonio Women’s Hall of Fame, an Image de San Antonio Outstanding Hispanic Role Model, one of San Antonio College’s 75 Most Distinguished Alumni and a recipient of the Governor’s Yellow Rose of Texas Award. In July, Ruiz received the Henry Guerra Lifetime Achievement Award for Excellence in Journalism from the San Antonio Association of Hispanic Journalists.
