Former student wins state honor in photojournalism

Former student Paul Zoeller was named South Carolina Photojournalist of the Year, and led his newspaper’s awards for photography with eight wins, including five for first place.

The Post and Courier claimed 97 press awards and the President’s Cup for Excellence on Saturday at the South Carolina Press Association banquet, taking home the most awards among the state’s largest newspapers for the ninth time in 10 years.  Awards included 39 for first place, including general excellence and the Judson Chapman Award for public service. The newspaper also won best newspaper website, and for the fifth time in six years was awarded the Reid Montgomery Freedom of Information Award for reporting that advances open government.
Zoeller pulls from his journalism background at this college and at the University of Texas at arlington to tell the story, capture the peak action moment in sports or find the perfect light while producing stills or multimedia presentations. He earned a degree in photojournalism at the University of Texas at Arlington.

Zoeller worked for many years with the Urban Journalism Workshop at San Antonio College and helped the young workshop students with photo skills to produce You S.A., the workshop newspaper.
The workshop had been offered at SAC since 1985, and was sponsored by San Antonio College, Dow Jones News Fund Inc., San Antonio Express-News, Texas State University-San Marcos, San Antonio Press Inc. and Canon Cameras.
